How to play Tic-Tac-Toucan 3D
Tic-Tac-Toucan 3D is Qubic — tic-tac-toe played inside a 4×4×4 cube instead of on a flat 3×3 grid. You are looking at four stacked layers of sixteen cells each, sixty-four cells in total. On your turn you claim one empty cell. The first player to line up four of their own marks in a straight line wins. A line can run across a single layer, straight down through all four layers, diagonally within a layer, or along a space diagonal that cuts corner-to-corner through the whole cube. There are 76 winning lines in all — far more than the eight on a flat board, which is why the cube plays nothing like the game you already know. Tips & strategy
- Learn where the strong cells are. The four cells at the very centre of the cube sit on more winning lines than any others, and the eight outer corners are next best. The cells in the middle of an outside face are the weakest real estate on the board.
- Count lines before you commit. Every cell belongs to somewhere between four and seven of the 76 winning lines. When two moves look equally good, take the one that sits on more lines.
- Watch the space diagonals. Lines that run corner-to-corner through the cube are the ones players miss most often — both their own chances and the threat coming at them.
- Forks decide games here far more than on a flat board. Because a single cell can complete several lines at once, look for a move that creates two threats simultaneously; your opponent can only block one of them.
- Do not tunnel-vision on one layer. Beginners play four separate flat games and lose to a vertical line running straight through them.
