How to play Reversi Reef
Reversi Reef is Reversi — also known as Othello — on an 8×8 board. You place a disc so that it traps one or more of your opponent's discs in a straight line (in any direction) between the disc you just placed and another of your own. Every trapped disc flips to your color. You may only play a move that flips at least one disc. When no moves remain, whoever owns the most discs wins. The lead can flip dramatically right up to the final move.
Tips & strategy
- Grab the corners. Corner discs can never be flipped, so they anchor whole rows and diagonals for the rest of the game.
- Avoid the squares next to an empty corner early — playing there often hands your opponent the corner.
- Don't chase quantity early. Having fewer discs in the midgame ("mobility") keeps your options open and is often a winning sign.
- Aim for stable edges that build out from corners you already own.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Reversi and Othello?
They are essentially the same game; Othello is a trademarked version with a fixed starting position. Reversi Reef uses the standard four-disc center start.
Why can the score swing so much?
Because a single move can flip a long line of discs, the lead changes hands constantly — the player ahead at move fifty can easily lose by move sixty.
What if I can't move?
If you have no legal flipping move, your turn is skipped. If neither player can move, the game ends and discs are counted.
