About Dots & Berries

Dots & Berries is the classic dots-and-boxes pencil game, online. Take turns drawing one line at a time; complete a box to claim a berry and move again. Most berries wins. Play with a friend by link, against an opponent, on one device, or versus the bot.

How to play Dots & Berries

Dots & Berries is the classic pencil-and-paper game of dots and boxes, brought online. Players take turns drawing a single line between two adjacent dots. Whenever your line completes the fourth side of a 1×1 box, you claim that box (a berry) and immediately take another turn. When every box is claimed, the player with the most berries wins. It looks simple, but the endgame is pure strategy.

Tips & strategy

  • Early on, avoid drawing the third side of any box — that hands your opponent a free box on their next move.
  • Learn the "double-cross" strategy: late in the game, decline the last two boxes of a chain to force your opponent to open the next, longer chain for you.
  • Count chains. The player who is forced to open the first long chain usually loses, so steer the board toward an odd or even number of chains in your favor.
  • Sacrifice small to win big — giving up a short chain to seize a long one is often the winning move.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get another turn after completing a box?

Completing the fourth side of a box earns you that box and a bonus turn. Stringing together a whole chain of boxes in one turn is how big swings happen.

What is a "chain"?

A chain is a run of boxes linked so that opening one lets your opponent take them all in sequence. Managing who is forced to open chains is the heart of the strategy.

Does board size change the game?

Yes — larger grids create longer chains and deeper strategy, while smaller grids play fast and casual.
